Being located in the Northwest part of Ohio, we get our fair share of winter weather here at Braun. The last few winters have been particularly cold, and many other parts of the country have experienced the same thing. To protect the investment you’ve made in your emergency vehicles, it is important to maintain them properly throughout the winter.

Braun Technical Service Specialist, Jim Lee, and Service Specialist, Shannan Boroff, have a few tips to help keep your ambulance running in top shape.

When it comes to the engine compartment, complete this checklist:

  • Check antifreeze to -32 degrees;
  • Check belts for wear, such as cracks;
  • Check hoses for wear, such as cracks;
  • Fill window washer bottle;
  • Top off all fluids;
  • Check and load test all batteries;
  • Check all battery connections.

For the module of the ambulance, complete this checklist:

  • Check all HVAC functions and change the filter (if needed);
  • Check IV and blanket warmers, if applicable;
  • Test key fob batteries, keyless entry, and hidden grill switches.

On the exterior of the unit, complete this checklist:

  • Check tire tread – there should be 3/16” or more;
  • Check tire pressure;
  • Check exhaust system;
  • Check windshield wiper blades for wear, such as cracks;
  • Check all under chassis grounds;
  • Lube all compartment and entry door latches;
  • Check all light bulbs;
  • If the unit has tire chains, test the system to make sure all is functioning properly.

To help with corrosion, wash your vehicle thoroughly and often throughout the winter. Make certain to wash the undercarriage, where salt and other corrosive materials can build up. Salt and dirt accumulation can also cover graphics and lights on the exterior of the unit, making them less visible. It’s important for safety to keep your ambulance clean. For crew safety, you should also remind everyone to wear their seat belts; more accidents happen in the winter.
